Did Amazon Alexa just have predict a catastrophic bombing?

Daily News

Well this is unnerving.

Amazon’s voice-activated digital assistant Alexa might just have predicted a catastrophic event in the future.

On Saturday, a bloke from Colorado Springs in the US asked his Echo Dot about the Hiroshima bombing and her answer was extremely ominous.

“This might answer your question,” the voice said.

“The bombing is 69 days – May 25th, 2018”.

Now, you could argue that this is just a mere programing error, with her phrasing being a little off.

But here’s the thing: the bombing of Hiroshima happened on August 6, 1945.

Sooooo we weren’t sure where she got May 25 from.

The logical response to this would be that Alexa simply misheard the question.

But because we’re highly paranoid and have a blind trust of the supremacy of artificial intelligence, we were inclined to go down the conspiracy theory route.

We wondered if somehow Alexa had intel collected from her network of other Alexa speakers/legion of spies and accidentally leaked a crazy end-of-world plot.

So we did a little of Googling and ended up on the sanest place on the internet – Reddit.

And here’s what we found:

Oh dear.

But then, we scrolled a few centimetres lower and found this:

And that theory does check out.

Heck, they’ve even lined up our mate Bruce Willis, so it sounds kinda legit:

We’ve reached out to Amazon for confirmation, but this movie is probably what mucked things up.

But forgetting clunky wording for a minute, there’s something inherently creepy about Alexa.

She’s a faceless speaker brimming with artificial intelligence who is always listening to you – it sounds as though we’re describing a diabolical sci-fi villain.

You don’t need to be a paranoid Baby Boomer dad who is suspicious of his microwave to be slightly uncomfortable about that idea.

But technophobia aside, there have been a few freaky stories circulating recently about Alexa’s glitches resulting in some unnerving moments.

It might be our overactive imaginations, but it’s hard not to see the sinister side to these stories:

Yikes.
